Meghan Markle Speaks on George Floyd's Death


“When truth is replaced by silence, the silence is a lie” this quote by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, a Russian poet is true when we talk about the death of George Floyd, a 46 years old black man who was killed by Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, who knelt on his neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds while being handcuffed and faced down on the road. Floyd repeatedly complained that he can’t breathe but he was shown no mercy by the officer. Later he was pronounced dead due to cardiac arrest by the application of neck pressure. This sparked riots all across The United States of America with people chanting slogans of “Black Lives Matter”.


People related to different fields of life all across the globe showed their anger and grief over this tragic incident. Apart from the pandemic, this terrible incident has affected many businesses all across the state.


Recently Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex gave a strong statement while addressing in a virtual commencement speech to the graduating students of her former school, Immaculate Heart High School, LA.


The Duchess of Sussex said, “The only wrong thing to say, is to say nothing”.


She then recalled some names of black people who were also unjustly killed by police and said. ”Because George Floyd’s life mattered, and Brianna Taylor’s life mattered and Philando Castile’s life mattered and Tamir Rice’s life mattered. And so did so many other people whose names we know and whose names we do not know. Stephon Clark, his life mattered.”

talked about her teacher from sophomore year who said, “Always remember to put
other’s needs before your own fears.”
